In A Food Mood: Caramel Apples

I have a devotion running today at Proverbs 31. Thanks to all of you who stop by after reading. At my blog I have a theme for each day (you can learn more about what that looks like by clicking on the "About Me" tab at the top of this blog). Today's theme is "In A Food Mood" so I am discussing caramel apples. Not really spiritual, but really delicious!

All through November I am going to be sharing some of my favorite holiday recipes, so please keep coming back, or enter your email in the sidebar where it says, fittingly, "Subscribe" to subscribe to my blog!

One of my favorite fall flavors is the tasty combo of caramel and apples.

Here's a couple of ways that I combine these flavors at my house:

Caramel Apples
Feeling ambitious? Make real caramel apples as a treat.

Caramel Dip
(buy the Kraft 14 oz bag of caramels and use the recipe on the back of the bag)
Tip: have your kids open all the caramels because you do not have 1) time or 2) the inclination to do such trivial things.
This takes mere minutes to mix up and if you buy one of those peeler/slicer dealies, you can slice up a bunch of apples in just a few more minutes.

Caramel Apple Pie
This recipe combines the flavor of apples and caramel in a pie. Delish!

Combine 10 caramel candies, each cut into 4 pieces, add 1/3 cup of flour. Add 3 cups chopped (1/2 inch cubes) Jonathan or Rome apples, 2/3 cup caramel ice cream topping and 2 tsp lemon juice. Mix well.

Pour mixture into frozen regular 9" pie crust and sprinkle with 1/2 cup pecan pieces.

Bake at 375 on a preheated baking sheet for 40-45 minutes. Store at room temp.

Caramel Apple Bars

Does a pie sound too ambitious? Try these delicious sounding bars.

Next week I will start posting Thanksgiving recipes. In the meantime, maybe the pie would be a great dessert to offer your guests or take wherever you are going? Something to consider!

Hi Marybeth, I just read my daily devotions over at Proverbs 31 and just wanted to let you know how much your words spoke to me. It is so true that we want so much out of life minus the necessary and growth building parts...Thanks for the reminder. Love your big family!

Thank you for the post about the iPod faith. Last night, I asked my husband if he knew what an iPod actually is! We have only had a computer in our home for the last six year because it was required for my work, but other than that, we are fairly low on the technology totem pole, and hope to stay that way. Our children beg us each year for a DS (some kind of hand held computer game?) but we tell them no each year. We explained to them that we would like them to read books, play outside, interact with others, etc. It's not as if we think these games are inherently evil, but what we often see around town are children lined up playing computer games rather than playing with each other! Or people going out to dinner and texting other people rather than talking to the people they are with! You are absolutely right - there is a LOT to be gained by what was unintended.

Love the caramel apple recipes! I think this is one of my favorite flavor combination, and I love the fact that you went three ways with it. I would love to make these for my kids this week, and I bet they would love it too! Thanks for sharing these!

The iPod faith really got me this morning. Had to "buy an album" for "one song" we really wanted, and I'm not sure I even like the rest of it. Your devotion this morning really spoke to me and reminded me that God is there on the other side (and through this), and He's going to grow me. I just have to keep listening until I find my new songs. And looking for what's unexpected. ;-) Thanks!

I love your metaphors! Thank you for sharing this idea. I think about the "flip sides" of some of those 45's I bought in my youth. Apart from the Beatle's (!), they were always a surprise as to whether I liked them or not. Usually I never played them, but still they were part of the package, just as in life!

Your blog reminded me of how I feel when I read my Bible at times -- I just want to open it up and find a verse that speaks to my heart an encourages me without actually reading through anything else or really thinking about it. It's when I'm working my way through the "tough stuff" in the Bible- usually in the Old Testament! -- that I find the gem of a verse that actually really and truly speaks to me!
