Here are a few more tips I gleaned about picture study. Thanks to those of you who said the post inspired you to "get more culture" in your house!

If you have boys you might try Remington. He painted horses, cowboys, & Indians.
Degas did ballerinas & horses.
Some good books for younger children to be on the lookout at the library are the artists' biographies by Ernest Raboff & the "What Makes a ___ a ____?" series (fill in artist's name like Rembrandt or Monet) by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The book "A Child's History of Art" by Hillyer (I think it's a new version with color prints) is something you can use for years of study.

My girls are young (7 and 8) and we have mostly always chosen artists that they like. We have loved Mary Cassatt, Degas (my 8 yr old's favorite),Van Gogh, DaVinci, Monet, Grandma Moses, Norman Rockwell. We were fortunate enough to go to the National Gallery in DC on a recent trip and got to see some of the pictures we have studied. If you do Monet, I recommend reading Linnea in Monet's Garden, it's a wonderful book. The library also has it as a video. We enjoy going to museums and seeing the art. I believe you should look at pictures of art, but also go see the real thing to see how big, and how small real art can be. If not, we go through life thinking art is 4 x 6 or 8 1/2 x 11.
If you missed it, one of my commenters also offered the tip of playing the board game Masterpiece.
Please feel free to offer any additional comments as to how you integrate picture study or any other "artsy" pursuits. I would love to learn from you guys!

Two things we have tried in the past that my kids have really enjoyed are the "Draw, Write, Now" books. Now I know that it doesn't really have anything to do with artists and paintings but it does give your kids a place to start if they need some help in the drawing department. I've also heard that "Drawing with Children" is good but it's about to be packed away when we move this month!
The other suggestion is the "Katie" books i.e. "Katie and the Sunflowers", "Katie and the Mona Lisa", "Katie Meets the Impressionists" by James Mayhew. There are several books about this little girl who loves to go to the art museum and the adventures she has when she interacts and actually goes into different painting by different artists. My children (8,7,5,3) can now easily look at a painting and tell you the name and the artist.
That's my 2 cents...now I'm broke! heehee

Hi Marybeth!
Just a wee whisper that we very much enjoy the game Masterpiece and these games also--we bought their "Impressionist Artists"-- a card game where you try to collect all the works of one painter--sample here:

And there is also this art memo game we've enjoyed: http://clarkart.stores.yahoo.net/immemgam.html
A pleasure to share the journey with you, Marybeth!
All's grace,
Ann
