A Verse For The Year

What is your verse for the year in 09? Do you have one yet? Have you even thought about claiming one? (Because it's okay if you haven't-- I mean it's certainly not a requirement by any stretch. I just enjoy doing it. I also enjoy making lists and crossing things off those lists. I also enjoy reading books about organization and writing out menu plans... are you catching the theme here? If this hits home with you, you might want to read on. If not, be free of any guilt or condemnation you might have inadvertently felt when I mentioned claiming a verse for the year.) Anyhoo, here is a post I wrote for Heart Of The Matter Online where I share my verse for the year, and some of the ones I have claimed in the past. Please share yours if you already know it-- leave me a comment as I am nosy that way and want to hear! You never know when your verse might inspire someone else!

Well, I will bite even though no one else has. Ü

I have learned that I guard my heart from everyone who means something to me, because I don't want to get hurt. So about a year ago a verse kept popping up on my main IE page. It is suppose to change everyday but for some reason it wasn't. So I really looked at it. It was 1Samuel 12:24
I don't have it memorized quite yet. But recently God has been placing that verse on my heart. I really want to know how to feel deeply with my heart. I notice in worship when I let my guard down a little it feels good, but I also want to cry...so I need to learn how to let my feelings out...I am not sure how to do that, but I am hoping in 2009 that this can be my big lesson. 2008 God lead me to start a non profit for foster care children, so now 2009 He will lead me to really feel so that I can help children better! I just may be a whole new person by years end! Ü But oh so looking forward to it!

Thanks for getting me to think about this.

My verse for the year that God has put on my heart is 2 Timothy 4:5 "As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." It seems to hit everything He is putting in front of me right now. It's encouraging as well to know the other 2 verses that keep coming to mind remind me I can do all things thru Him who strengthens me and He will give me a desire to obey, both from Phillipians. Thanks for sharing your thoughts as well, Jill

My verse (and I think our family verse) for the year is Romans 10:17, 'Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

My commitment to Jesus this year (inspired by something I read on your blog) is to not turn on my computer each day until I have spent time with Him n God's Word - hearing and growing my faith in Him.

Happy New Year!
Renee

Marybeth,

I LOVE your verse for this year, it is one of my favourite and one that I lean on quite frequently. As I was reading your post I felt challenged to as God for a verse, and thought to look in my bible later. His answer was closer than I thought. I flicked over to read your article and there was my verse. “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.” (I John 4:18) :o)

As soon as I read it, I knew that was it. But for different reasons than you. I know this year is going to be an awesome one, I can feel it. But I have always found it hard to let people (even God)in, and this verse is the perfect challenge to let love into my life, His unconditional love that I have found so very hard to accept since I became a Christian 3 years ago. I also have trouble loving myself. This is the year that all changes!! Thank you for the inspiration you are for me, and even though you probably don't realise it, many days you provide that extra push I sometimes need to seek out my God.

Blessings to you and your family in this New Year!!

Love,
Rach

Wow! What a great idea. After reading your blog, the thought of having a verse for the year really stayed with me. The Proverbs 31 Devotion for today (12/31/08) held a verse that really inspired and spoke to my heart:
Romans 15:13 "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." (NIV)
Thanks for sharing this wondeful idea.

OK, why oh why didn't I think of claiming a verse for the year?! Seems so simple...off to think about which one it should be:)

A verse or theme for a year is something that had never even crossed my mind. But I think it's a wonderful idea, so I prayed about it. At first I just got a word: surrender. I must say that I was hoping for something a little more specific, more profound.

Leave it to God to answer even that request when yesterday I just felt compelled to read John 3. And right there it was in verse 30: "He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less." (NLT)

Yes, Lord, that is my cry this year!

Thanks for the idea, Marybeth!

It's the same for me! I had never heard of anyone asking God for a verse for the year, but knew I wanted one after I read your blog! Last night, God reminded me of this scripture. It is Eph 3:20-21 which says, "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations..." As for me, I'm am humbly seeking God for some BIG things this year...and He is so sweetly reminding me that He is able...oh so very, very able!!! I know He is up to much more than I can see or imagine, and I can't wait to see the outcome:)

Thank you for your ministry! It's changing lives!
